PCB plans for an eco-friendly Puja

MALDA, 31 AUG: The West Bengal Pollution Control Board and the department of environment have jointly planned to give “Sera-der Sera Nirmal Puja” awards 2009 in the Malda district. After Kolkata and south Bengal district, this is the first time the department of environment has planned to include the Malda district for this honour, awarded among Durga Puja committees every year in north Bengal.

Departmental officials and environment experts today held a meeting here with the organisers of the ensuing Durga Puja 2009 to spread environmental awareness amongst them.

They described the present position of environment pollution, global warming and the effects it could lead to by 2070 and urged everyone to save the environment. The officials of the department of environment have urged them to be careful about materials used for pandals and idols. They suggested using lead-free colours for idols. According to them, microphones should be used with a sound and time limit and they must have an action plan for the immersion of idols.

Besides, the judges will also consider safety, security and comfort in puja pandals, legal aspects, arrangements of fire extinguishers, traffic management, aesthetics, responsibility towards the society and overall impression.

The chief law officer of the department of environment Mr Biswajit Mukherjee approached the present organizers and voluntary organisations to build at least one camp called “Sabuj Thikana” (a space under an umbrella for an exhibition) for to build environment awareness in Malda town during the pujas.

In the meantime, the district administration has already held a meeting with puja organizers and alerted them about law and order.

Yesterday, the Malda SP held another meeting with the puja committees and voluntary organizations.

The district police have decided to take out rallies on 18 and 24 September to maintain peace and communal harmony during the festivals.
