Rabies hit Malda, death toll rises to 2

Statesman News Service
MALDA, 3 SEPT: A rabies affected Alfaz Ali (46) of Salalpur, Harishchandrapur, died last night on way to hospital taking the rabies death toll to two in successive days in the district. Panic prevails in Harishchandrapur after the death of the two men as the rogue dog has bitten 32 persons including two school students between 3 and 10 August.

According to the Malda CMOH Dr Srikanta Roy, the ACMOH in Chanchal sub-division Dr S K Biswas has informed that the latest victim Alfaz Ali, who was referred to the district hospital last evening, died on the way. It is the second rabies death in two successive days, the CMOH added.

“Perhaps the dog that bit them was mad. We had provided anti-rabies vaccine (ARV) to all 35 patients. Had we known about the mad dog we would have advised them to use anti rabies serum (ARS). ARV takes time to work,” Dr Roy disclosed.

The Malda CMOH has asked the ACMOH in Chanchal sub-division to carry on surveillance of all 32 rabies patients. The block medical officials have been asked to keep a watch on the symptoms of the affected and take special care in consultation with the district headquarters.

Medical teams have left for the villages from where identified rabies patients did not report to the hospital.

Two groups of rabies victims today came to two health centres in Chanchal and Harishchandrapur respectively to take vaccine.

After the death of two hydrophobia patients, the Malda CMOH Dr Srikanta Roy was disappointed and said: “I have contacted specialist doctors in Beliaghata ID hospital seeking their suggestion for the treatment of 32 more patients. We would take care of the patients according to their instruction.”

The doctors had administered ARV on the first of the victims Pir Muhammad.

But he turned violent on Saturday. He was referred to the district hospital on Monday. His poor relatives, however, brought him back home when the district hospital referred him to Beliaghata hospital. ()
