SFI activists assault ITI instructor

Statesman News Service
MALDA, 4 SEPT: Supporters of the SFI affiliated Industrial Training Institute students’ union have allegedly assaulted Mr Debdas Maji, an instructor of institute. Mr Joydeb Sutradhar, secretary of the students’ body allegedly led the attackers. The victim Mr Maji lodged a complaint with the English Bazaar police station against Mr Sutradhar and a ‘discharged trainee’ Imtiaz Sheikh. According to Mr Maji, he was a victim of a conspiracy.

Mr Maji has complained to police that the SFI leader forced him to withdraw his recommendation to discharge Imtiaz Sheikh and then attacked him and snatched his cell phone. “Though the attackers returned the cell phone, they had damaged the memory card,” Mr Maji has complained.

The principal, Mr TK Nath, recently discharged Imtiaz Sheikh on Mr Maji's recommendation and proposal of the institution supervisor Mr JC Acharya. Mr Nath said: “I am on leave. I would look into the matter on Monday. I discharged Imtiaz on disciplinary ground as, he did not have the required attendance percentage.” The acting principal Mr J C Acharya refused to speak on the matter.

Mr Maji has refused to browbeaten by the agitating students. “I would inform the matter to the higher authorities through proper channel and seek transfer from this institution on grounds of insecurity,” Mr Maji said.

The SFI leadership is trying to dilute the matter. The organisation's district secretary Mr Joy Chakraborty said: “Suggested by the principal, the students approached Mr Maji to reconsider his discharge recommendation against Imtiaz. The SFI leader and students protested when Mr Maji started recording the discussion. It is nothing serious, the students are trying to sort out the problem with Mr Maji.”
