Malda to implement state’s housing project

Statesman News Service

MALDA, 17 SEPT: The Malda district administration has planned to implement state government's housing project for the downtrodden people here.

Following the instruction of the minister of state for minority affairs, Mr Abdus Sattar, the district magistrate Mr Sridhar Ghosh has asked two sub-divisional officers to hold a meeting with the block development officers to prepare the list of beneficiaries by October this year.

The state has allotted a fund of Rs 1 lakh to each member for constructing their houses.

The Malda district has fixed a target of building at least 2,000 houses irrespective of all caste and creed, which also includes widows who do not own houses.

Mr Sridhar Ghosh said that the housing project was formulated by the state itself and at present the project has been introduced in four districts ~ Murshidabad, Malda, North and South Dinajpur.

Mr Abdus Sattar has been assigned for monitoring the project in all the four districts.

Initially the Malda administration has decided that members of a total of 2008 gram sansads would select one beneficiary from each sansad for whom a house would be constructed.

If block officials with the help of panchayat officials can select at least one beneficiary from one gram sansad the district administration will be able to achieve the target to build 2,000 houses here under the project, Mr Ghosh said.

“In Malda there are many people who do no have their own home. The state has decided to provide shelter for them. The administration would build their houses. “No fund would be handed over to them directly," Mr Ghosh said.
