DM takes up Anganwadi cause

Statesman News Service
MALDA, 18 SEPT: The Malda district magistrate Mr Sridhar Ghosh has asked the block development officers and panchayat officials to approach the people of the district so that they offer at least one decimal land for the construction of an Anganwadi centre in the minority dominated areas here.
The district administration said that it was facing difficulties to utilise funds allotted for the construction of Anganwadi centres under the Integrated Child Development Scheme (ICDS) owing to a huge dearth of land.
The minority affairs department has already allotted a fund of more than Rs 10 crore, fifty percent of the total fund allotted for this district and asked the district administration to begin the work.
“We are facing a lot of problem to begin the work due to the inavailability of land. The work can get much easier if the rural people donate at least on decimal of their lands for the construction of the ICDS centre,” said Mr Sridhar Ghosh.
The district development department has received some list of lands and presently they are carrying out the basic verification. But the number is not sufficient for the required number of lands in many blocks which are backward and minority dominated.
However, the Malda Zilla Parishad had also failed to build these ICDS centres because of non-cooperation from the contractors. The contractors did not participate in the tender terming it as a ‘non profitable’ work.
