Citu men set Malda Cong office on fire


MALDA, 17 SEPT: The CPI-M backed Citu supporters set a Congress office on fire at Kharba under Chanchal police station last night after two CPI-M workers were severely assaulted by a group led by the Congress leader, police said.
Trouble broke out over the issue of formation of a union for illegal mechanized rickshaw vans at Kharba.
The Citu was working to form a union there based locally made three wheelers fitted with a motor.
The vehicle, popularly known as Bhutbhuti, is not approved by the transport authorities.
It was learnt that one CPI-M member, Mr Abdur Rouf was allegedly collecting subscription from the owners of motorised rickshaw in the name of fund collection by the local gram panchayat.
The Congress leader and Kharba gram panchayat pradhan, Mr Mahababul Hoque protested against the alleged practice and assaulted Akhtar Hossian, chain master of the illegal three wheelers.
Later Mr Hoque and his associates attacked Mr Rouf, a CPI-M local committee member.While the information about the attack on Mr Rouf spread, hundreds of people from Nijlamari village, a red bastion, rushed to Kharba and set fire on the Congress party office last night.
Police rushed to the spot and rescued some people from inside the office.
Police arrested four persons from the spot, who were identified as Sahorab Ali, Nazimul Hoque, Maleque Hossain and Jahangir Alam respectively. SNS
