Criminal’s ‘murder’ sparks off tension in Malda

Statesman News Service
MALDA, 2 SEPT: Tension sparked off at Bagbari and Bahanno-Bigha villages following the “murder” of a criminal on Sunday night. Locals are gripped in the fear of fresh violence between the two groups and subsequent police raids.

The district authorities have posted police in the area round the clock and decided to continue the police camp for a while. Though police arrested few persons belonging to both groups to tackle the situation but both are waiting for taking on each other.

The trouble broke out when a group of six youths abducted a minor girl belonging to minority community on Saturday night and allegedly tired to rape her.

Locals including women blocked the road for more than four hours on Sunday demanding arrest of the criminals. On Sunday evening villagers attacked Manoj Mandal (25) when he came to meet his father who was taken into custody. The mob attacked him and he was beaten to death.

On the other hand, the medical tests of the girl proved that she was not raped. She was allegedly molested and was rescued on Saturday night.

Police are still in action to nab the criminals in connection with the abduction case and visited the spot along with the girl. Three persons have been held for allegedly killing Manoj Mandal.

The IC English Bazaar police station Mr Bipul Mazumder said: “The situation is totally under control. Common people may fear or apprehend fresh violence but we do not have such information”.
