MALDA, 4 SEPT: A CPI-M supporter was killed and two others were injured in a clash with Congress supporters at the Narayanpur and Majampur villages in Kaliachak police station today.

Tension was simmering since last night between two groups - one led by Mr Asadullah Biswas, a CPI-M leader of Majampur and another led by Congress leader Mr Tuhur Biswas of Nrayanpur village near the Bangladesh border.

The situation broke down when Mr Tuhur Biswas's followers attacked Majampur village hurling numerous bombs and opened fire. They set four houses on fire as well.

An Asadullah loyalist Ketabul Sheikh (40) was shot. He died of his injuries at the Malda district hospital. Two others with bullet injuries are undergoing treatment in the hospital.

“The clash was over a financial deal,” said the Malda SP Mr Satyajit Bandyopadhayay.

The clash between the warring factions has caused serious tension in the area and people are staying indoors for fear of personal safety despite police patrol in the area.

According to the police, both groups are engaged in smuggling activities and had fallen apart over such a clandestine deal. The latest clash was over cattle smuggling.
