Festival ‘sugar’ for APL & BPL consumers

Statesman News Service
MALDA, 16 SEPT: The district controller, food and supplies, today finally announced that consumers belonging to both BPL and APL (below the poverty line and above the poverty line) will be getting sugar just before Id and the Durga Puja festival.
It may be noted that since May 2009 no sugar has been allotted in this region for BPL people. The dearth of sugar had frustrated the modified ration dealers as they were under pressure from consumers.
Trouble cropped up after the state finance minister Mr Asim Dasgupta declared that sugar would be distributed to both APL and BPL people through the public distribution system.
The district controller, food and supplies, Malda, Mr Arunagshu Bhattacharya, said: “APL people can now procure sugar.” “The distributors have been asked to bring sugar from the Haldia Sugar Mill in East Midnapur for distribution to APL people through ration shops before Id and Puja. I hope MR dealers will be able to collect sugar by the end of this week or next week,” said Mr Bhattacharya.
“The APL consumers will be getting sugar at the rate of Rs 27.50 per kg. One APL family will be allotted one kg sugar per month,” he informed.
The present market rate for sugar is Rs 33 to 34 per kg in Malda. According to the district controller, food and supplies, the Essential Commodities Supply Corporation (ECSC) has got sugar allotted for BPL here.
The sugar for BPL people will be distributed soon for three districts - Malda, North and South Dinajpur.
The BPL people will be getting 125 gm sugar per head per week. ()
