Puja club members beat up merchants

MALDA, 25 SEPT.: A group of members of a club have allegedly beaten up a few retail cloth merchants when they refused to give them subscription fees for Durga Puja at Bulbulchandi in Habibpur police station last night. The merchants said that the club members demanded an abnormal amount of money which they refused to pay. One trader Mr Narayan Karmakar, was injured and admitted to Malda district hospital with critical head injuries.

Traders alleged that an armed group led by Mr Rajib Daga, who is a member of Bulbulchandi gram panchayat belonging to Forward Bloc, attacked them. “They demanded Rs 1,000 as subscription fees from each of them for the Puja at Binapani club,” Mr Karmakar said.

After they attacked the traders, another group belonging to Biplab Smriti Sangha, attacked Binapani club and ransacked its pandal. Incidentally, Mr Narayan Karmakar is associated with the Biplab Smriti Sangha.

Additional police forces were deployed there to ease tension. Police had detained Ajay Prasad, a member of Binapani club, this afternoon. The other culprits fled the area after the incident and Binapani club had been asked to stop celebrating their puja. SNS
