Probe ordered into panchayat foul play

Statesman News Service
MALDA, 24 SEPT: The Gazole block development official Mr S Santra today lodged a complaint with police against a gram panchayat and asked them to inquire into alleged financial irregularities concerning the Indira Awas Yojona (IAY) funds.

The BDO Mr Santra took this decision following a complaint lodged by a group of 45 local residents. A sum had been allotted in the name of Tala Soren, who died, for the purpose of building her a house.

Villagers like Mr Lakshman Mahata, Mr Jashthi Mahata and Mrs Jhuma Besra alleged that the pradhan of Salaidanga gram panchayat (Mrs Sakina Bibi) withdrew Rs 17,500, the first installment of IAY, in the name of Mrs Chuni Hembram which was officially allotted for Tala Soren before she died many days ago.

After the death of Tala Soren, the pradhan allegedly selected one Mrs Chuni Hembram, whose late husband's name was Ramkrishna Murmu.

They furnished an old Electoral Photo Identify Card of Mrs Chuni Hembram and a bank account was opened in Bangiya Grameen Bikash Bank, Krishnapur branch, to withdraw the money in the name of duplicate beneficiary Mrs Chuni Hembram.

The matter came to light after the withdrawal of the IAY funds and Chuni was deprived of the share. A relative of Tala Soren informed Opposition leaders of the gram panchayat showing the original Epic of Tala Soren and decided to lodge a complaint with the BDO to take action against the gram panchayat.;SNS
