Trinamul leader held on cheating charge

MALDA, 22 SEPT: The police arrested a Trinamul Congress leader from Malda, Mr Nirmal Karmakar, under article 138 of the Negotiable Instruments Act on the basis of a cheating case initiated by the Goa police.Mr Karmakar was the working president of Trinamul Congress in Malda and state committee member of the party when Mr Dulal Sarkar was the party district president a few months ago. The current Trinamul district president Mr Goutam Chakraborty, however, said that Mr Karmakar was never a working president, nor a state committee member. He also added that the Trinamul did not have a district committee at present.Former Trinamul district president, Mr Dulal Sarkar, who is also vice chairman of English Bazaar Municipality, was not available for comment.“Mr Karmakar phoned me this morning to let me know that he will surrender to the police. He is a victim of a conspiracy,” said the Trinamul district president.Mr Karmakar, the arrested Trinamul leader also said that he had not issued any cheque to any medicine company from Goa for buying medicine. “I have been arrested as a cheque to a certain medicine company from Goa was dishonoured but I have no connection with the dishonoured cheque,” claimed Mr Karmakar, who has a wholesale medicine distribution business. The Trinamul leader Mr Karmakar has been in the middle of other controversies recently. He was beaten up by a group of Trinamul workers at Malda town during a conference and the party's former district president Mr Dulal Sarkar said that a financial deal was the reason behind the assault.
