Statesman News Service
MALDA, Oct. 29: The chief minister, Mr. Buddhadeb Bhattacharjee will lay the foundation stone for the University of Gour Banga in English Bazaar town on 16 November. The registrar of UGB, Mr Tapas Chatterjee announced this today.

According to the university sources, the chief minister will arrive in Malda on 15 November in the afternoon by a train to address the state conference of WEBCUTA (West Bengal College and University Teachers’ Association) at Malda College auditorium.

On 16 November, he will lay the foundation stone for the UGB campus building and then leave for Kolkata by the Kanchenjangha Express tentatively.

Earlier it was planned that the Lok Sabha Speaker will lay the foundation stone for the UGB campus, but it was later cancelled due to notification of Kharba by poll just before panchayat polls.

The Congress sources, however, said that with the next Parliamentary elections approaching fast the ruling party might try to milk the matter in electoral terms.

According to UGB sources, a four- storied building will be constructed initially and once it is constructed the post graduation courses for science and arts faculties will start. Besides, the building would house the administrative building and the library.

Nearly 30 acres of land have been earmarked for the UGB campus close to Malda Central Bus Terminus, which is under construction in English Bazaar Municipal area.

The UGB sources said that there was work being done on the architectural design and the estimated plan for the university campus.

The estimated plan and its design will be submitted to the state higher education authorities in the first week of November, said Mr. Tapas Chatterjee, the registrar of the UGB.

At present, the UGB has been functioning from a camp office in Malda College and it has plans to introduce seven campus post graduation courses from December this year.
