FCI to stamp mid-day meal rice bags in Malda

Statesman News Service
MALDA, Oct. 1: The food department of the district magistrate office has requested the general manager of Food Corporation of India (FCI) in Malda to stamp a mark of its organisation on all bags of rice meant for mid-day meal before delivery to the storing agents.

The decision was taken to alert the FCI after detection of irregularities regarding mid-day meal, which is allegedly being replaced on transit by unscrupulous distributors appointed for this job.

Recently, the responsible officials visited some godowns of the storing agents and found that there was no mark of FCI on the bag of rice stored in the house of distributors.

The photographs taken by the officials show that the bags were properly stitched with a label attached that states the place from where the bags were procured.

“It was very difficult for us to identify whether the rice meant for mid-day meal was delivered from the FCI because there was no mark or sign of the FCI”, a senior administrative officer said.

During the inspection it was also found that the 'quality rice' was not equally delivered to the distributors in this district. The quality of rice varies from one bag to another.

The education officials have recently got information that a primary school received six bag of rice with six types of quality for mid day meal.

The district magistrate recently issued an order and asked all block development officers to visit godowns of distributors to check whether the rice meant for mid day meal was delivered from the FCI.

“The objective of this order is to verify whether the rice meant for mid-day meal stored in the distributors’ godown belongs to the FCI.

Based on complaints of poor quality rice distributed to schools, the officials would find out where the quality rice from FCI is delivered to?” Mr C R Das, the Malda DM, told The Statesman.

The DM has recently assigned 10 officers from accounts service to audit of mid day meal accounts for 10 blocks out of 15 ones in the first phase.
