EBM restricts firecrackers during processions

Statesman News Service
MALDA, Oct 9:
Following the Pollution Control Board (PCB) guidelines the English Bazaar Municipality (EBM) has imposed restrictions on using powerful firecrackers during procession for the immersion of Durga idols in Malda.
The vice chairman of the EBM Mr. Dulal Sarkar said police and a section of EBM staff would keep an eye on the procession and take action against the organiser if they violate discipline and use crackers on roads creating traffic congestion.
“The civic body has arranged all possible facilities at Ramkrishna Mission Ghaat for immersion of idols. The Puja organisers have been asked not to immerse used flowers leaves and other items in the river. The organisers would hand over all waste to civic body officials at the ghat according to the guideline of the PCB guidelines”, said Mr. Sarkar.
The district police have set up a camp at the Ramkrishna Mission Ghaat to control mob. The district administration has asked Puja organisers to complete immersion of all idols by Sunday.
According to civic body, a particular area of the river Mahananda at Mission Ghaat has been barricaded for immersion. Twenty labourers have been appointed there who will clear the site immediately after immersion, following the guideline of the PCB.
In order to avoid any drowning incident, two boats and a rescue team have been posted at immersion ghaat from Sunday evening.
The procession for immersion will be prevented at Barlow Girls’ School from entering Mission Ghaat road. Only the trucks carrying idols will be parked at a field in front of the Malda Ramkrishna Mission Math. (END)
