'Revise fares for rickshaw rides'

Statesman News Service
MALDA, Oct 6: District magistrate Mr CR Das has instructed the English Bazaar civic body chief to conduct a survey to revise rickshaw fares since rickshaw pullers have reportedly been claiming higher fares after the traffic rearrangement system started on 1 October.

After implementing the new traffic system, the district administration has received complaints against rickshaw pullers who are charging extra fare from passengers in areas where they have been prevented from entering "shortcut routes" they had followed earlier.

The district magistrate Mr CR Das was also informed that people were facing problems to go to the western side of the town from Chittaranjan Market after the traffic rearrangement and rickshaw pullers were demanding high fare due to one-way traffic system.

At present, a rickshaw puller cannot go to Muslim Institute from Chittaranjan Market, a 150 metres stretch, directly.

A rickshaw puller cannot ply on Cemetery Road, which was allowed earlier, from the market.

Following the new system, the rickshaw puller will have to ply through BG Road and KJ Sanyal Road via Nazrul Sarani to reach Muslim Institute connecting Rabindra Avenue, which is more than one km stretch. They are charging Rs. 5 more than the present rate, which was revised by the English Bazaar civic body recently and came in to force on 15 September 2008.

Both the district magistrate Mr CR Das and SP Mr Satyjit Bandyopadhyay today told The Statesman: “A few roads and lanes would be ‘modified’ with a short notice where common people will face problems. We are observing the new road rules formulated and executed on 1 October to ease traffic congestion and better rearrangement in the interest of the people”.

The district administrative officials said the acute traffic congestion problem in Malda town has been eased in major parts of the town.

Restriction of vehicle movements has become successful to ease traffic. Passenger buses from Atul Chandra Kumar Market are reaching Rathbari five point crossing on NH-34 before time.

The Malda SP said the newly formulated traffic system, especially for automobiles movement, would continue during Puja festival. “After Pujas the present system may be modified slightly”.

Top district officials including civic body chief today admitted that ‘unauthorised rickshaws’ have been creating traffic snarls in this town.

The district magistrate has instructed the civic body to restrict movement of hundreds of "unauthorised rickshaws" in this town.
