Tribal widow murdered

Statesman News Service
MALDA, Oct 12: A fifty five- year- old tribal widow, Baha Murmu, was murdered at Raghunathpur village last night under Gazol police station.

Police are investigating the incident to ascertain whether she was killed because people suspected that she was a witch or there were other reasons behind the murder.

It is being reported that she might have been killed following a property dispute as she possessed three-bigha farmland.

Baha reportedly identified one Rupai Murmu during the assault and in her dying statement she named Rupai as the principal assaulter.

Three to four persons attacked the victim at her residence and murdered her.

Police are looking for Rupai Murmu. Police also detained her two sons Sunil and Raju for interrogation. Sunil, who was asleep in another room, rushed out as her mother was screaming for help.

“I woke up hearing my mother screaming”, he said. During interrogation Raju said that he had not been at home last night when the incident had taken place.

It was also learnt that one of the victim's brothers, who lives close-by, called her a ‘witch’ and said that as she was responsible for his son's prolonged illness. No one has been arrested so far.
