Special drive in Malda , more than 150 held

MALDA, Oct.28: Launching a special drive Malda police arrested more than 150 gamblers and criminals across the district in the last five days as preventive measures to maintain law and order during Kali puja and Diwali celebrations.

Police have so far seized more than Rs 70, 000 from the gamblers following raids in different areas, said Malda SP.

Last night, police intercepted a group of motorcyclists near Amriti under English Bazaar police station. Police arrested six persons and recovered two firearms from them. One of them had been allegedly involved in a robbery case. Two policemen were injured in the scuffle with them.

It may be mentioned here that the English Bazaar police had also arrested one Rupchand Ghosh recently in connection with the robbery case.

According to police, Rupchand was involved in looting money meant for a government office near Mahedipur, a few months back.

The Malda police would continue patrolling round the clock the sensitive zones across the district to maintain law and order and communal harmony during festivals.
