Sanitation honour for panchayat

MALDA, Oct. 17: This is for the first time that a gram panchayat of Malda district has attained the status of ‘Nirmal Gram’ for implementing sanitation programme.

For the last few years, since the execution of the sanitation programme started in earnest at the panchayat level, Malda district was lagging far behind in comparison with other districts in the state.

This time, 17 gram panchayats in the state have been declared ‘Nirmal Gram’. Of them Pirganj Gram Panchayat (GP) in Ratua-II block in northern Malda district is one.

Mrs Shibani Mahaldar, pradhan of Pirganj GP has been asked to receive the award from the President of India, Mrs Pratibha Patil, in Guwahati to receive the Nirmal Gram award

It may be noted here that the Pirganj GP has achieved the Nirmal Gram distinction on the basis of the performance of the previous civic body run by the Congress.

But, interestingly, the CPI-M came to power this year after rural polls and the CPI-M pradhan Mrs Shibani Mahaldar would leave for Guwahati today to receive the award from the President of India.

Mrs. Patil would present the ‘ Nirmal Gram’ awards on 20 October.

According to Mrs. Shibani Mahaldar , prodhan , Pirganj GP, a team had recently visited the G P area and interacted with the people regarding sanitation awareness.

The team has also examined system of sanitation and hygiene implemented in drinking water sources.
