Worshipping ten-headed Kali

MALDA, Oct 27: Members of Byayam Samiti in English Bazaar town traditionally worship a ten-headed Kali idol just a day before Kali puja and the puja is held during the day unlike the traditional puja which takes place at night. The Puja begun this morning with the regular chanting of Sanskrit hymns. There were no illuminations on the occasion of this puja. Yet many devotees assembled here to offer puja. The Samiti was established in 1930 and was closely involved with the struggle for independence. According to the puja organisers, the freedom fighters derived strength from worshipping Kali to take on the might of the British regime and the tradition has continued with a million people coming from far away places to offer obesance to the goddess of srength. n SNS
