DM asked to find land for development

MALDA, Oct 23: In order to develop the infrastructure of Mahedipur land customs station in English Bazaar, the Malda district magistrate Mr. C R Das has been asked to identify at least 10 to 15 acres of land for acquisition near the existing customs station, close to India-Bangladesh border.

Apart from the Malda district magistrate, three other district magistrates of South Dinajpur, North 24-Parganas and Darjeeling have been asked to identify land to be acquired for the infrastructure development in their respective land customs stations. A high level meeting was held in Kolkata on Monday with four districts officials where the decision to acquire land near the existing land port was taken. Apart from the district officials the top officials of the state and the Central government including the Customs Commissioner were present.

The Central and the state government officials instructed the district officials to identify the required land preferably close to the existing portland like Mahedipur, Hilli, Fulbari in north Bengal and Ghojadanga in south Bengal. According to official sources, it was also decided that the land port should be developed in both India and Bangladesh to facilitate the development of foreign trade. To develop the basic infrastructure of a land port it was decided that a cargo complex (truck terminal) covering 10 to 15 acres of land would be set up and it should be equipped with a capacity for parking 600 to 800 trucks along with wire house, weigh bridge, customs office, immigration office, banks, waiting room for passengers and other persons related to trade. The Malda district magistrate Mr. C R Das said that he would conduct a survey along with the district land acquisition department to identify the required land close to the existing Mahedipur land customs station in English Bazaar and would send details about the identified land to the government soon.
