Illegal liquor shops raided in Malda

Statesman News Service
MALDA, Oct 7: Acting on a tip off, police arrested two persons for allegedly selling liquor illegally and demolishing two unauthorised counters in front of the Chittaranjan Market in the heart of the English Bazaar town last evening.

Both the district magistrate Mr CR Das and the superintendent of police, Mr Satyajit Bandyopadhyay, launched the drive based on information.

The government has officially issued order to stop selling liquors from the authorised counters during festival.

Though the authorised shops are closed officially but to meet up people's demand there are many counters across the English Bazaar town that sells liquor. A section of small traders had bought liquor from authorised counters before the order was passed and they had stored it for selling them with high price.

It may be noted that such traders have been running the counters defiantly due to the alleged inaction of police. People who love to drink during festival buy liquor from such counters when face crisis. It has been a common practice in English Bazaar over the past few years.

The district magistrate, Mr CR Das, said: “I had got the information earlier and had decided to stop this. Acting on a tip off, we have arrested two persons and demolished their counters. Police will take action against other counters in future”.

Last evening, following the instruction of the district magistrate, police evicted hawkers from the footpaths on BG Road yesterday late evening. The eviction drive continued even today. The hawkers, who were selling garments on footpath expressed unhappiness over the harsh decision of the district administration.

The district magistrate, Mr CR Das, said: “We allowed them till 'Shasthi' but they continued even today. The  encroachment creates a lot of trouble for he pedestrians specially during the Pujas when there is a huge crowd on the roads”.

After the end of Puja, hawkers would be evicted from all footpaths in this town, the Malda DM said.
