Pradhan defies CPM diktats...

Statesman News Service
MALDA, Oct. 24: The Socialist Party, one of the constituents of the Left Front, has succeeded in electing its candidate as Pradhan of a Gram Panchayat with the help of Trinamul Congress members in overt defiance of the CPI-M diktat on the matter.

Mr Dinesh Khan of the Socialist Party, defeated Mrs Popy Das, a CPI-M member, by one vote and got elected as Pradhan of Muchia Gram Panchayat in Old Malda block. The block panchayat official today conducted the election in the Muchia GP office. Mr Ujjal Sarkar, a CPI-M member, who had been elected as the Pradhan of the Muchia GP in the last rural polls, had to step down following a complaint.

It is learnt that Mr Sarkar, a high school teacher, did not inform the school authorities after being elected as Pradhan of Muchia Gram Panchayat and continued drawing salary from the school.

When the matter came to light the school authorities lodged a compliant with appropriate authorities and Mr Sarkar had to step down from the post in accordance with the panchayat rules.

Interestingly, when the Mr Sarkar was elected as Pradhan, a Socialist Party member was elected his deputy (upa pradhan). But, today, the Socialist Party members decided to field its candidate for the post of Pradhan. The Trinamul Congress supported his candidature. The Muchia Gram Panchayat comprises 13 members. Of them the CPI-M has six members and SP has two.
