Political leaders, traders unhappy with new road rules

Statesman News Service
MALDA, Oct. 2: After introducing new road rules for rearrangement of traffic system in English Bazaar town yesterday, the district administration and police have decided to adopt a ‘wait and watch’ policy for its success despite criticism from political leaders and traders’ body..

The district administration has issued several restrictions regarding loading and unloading of goods for traders, much to the relief of people who were facing a lot of inconvenience due to poor road conditions.

When the CPI (M) district secretary criticised the administrative decision of implementing the new traffic arrangement before Pujas, the Malda Merchants’ Chamber of Commerce also criticised the schedule fixed by the administration for loading and unloading of goods including essential items for their business. The superintendent of police Mr Satyajit Bandyopadhayay said: “ We will overlook the schedule fixed for loading and unloading of goods till Pujas but after Pujas we will not allow loading and unloading of goods and the traders will have to follow restrictions imposed by the administration”.

The district magistrate and superintendent of police are both busy with analysis after receiving feedback by the people for better traffic rearrangement in this town where congested roads cannot accommodate big automotive vehicles, rickshaws, cycles and pedestrians.

It may be noted that traffic movement has been restricted from 8 a.m to 8 p.m everyday. Both the Malda DM Mr C R Das and SP Mr Satyajit Bandyopadhdyay are looking for an appropriate parking space in the heart of the town to ease traffic flow.

There is no parking space near Chittaranjan Market place, a popular hub.

The district administration has allowed traders to unload goods from its carriers from 10 p.m to 6 a.m at the English Bazaar town including the National Highway 34. But it has imposed restrictions regarding the same during the day.

The traders have been allowed to load goods from 12 p.m to 2p.m in English Bazaar town and from 12 p.m to 4 p.m on NH~ 34.

It may be noted the traders in English Bazaar town used to occupy either the side of the NH~ 34 and other roads for loading and unloading through out the day, disrupting traffic.

Locals had complained to the administration, demanding immediate respite.
