Fund sought for Wakf land survey

Statesman News Service
MALDA, Oct. 20: The state land and land reforms department has sought Rs 30 lakh from the minority development department to continue survey for identification of encroached Wakf land and properties in the state, the state minority affairs officials said today.

Earlier, the minority development department had allotted Rs 40 lakh for identification of Wakf land and properties allegedly grabbed by others, including some local promoters. The survey has been going on in several districts.

The state minister for minority development Mr Abdus Sattar, said here on Saturday that following the survey across the state being conducted by the land and land reforms department his department had succeeded in restoring many of the Wakf properties.

“At present the number of Wakf assets stands at 19,000 but earlier the number of assets was only 8044”, Mr Sattar claimed adding that the department would recover more Wakf land and properties from the clutches of the encroachers and would chalk out a plan to earn revenue from them to be used for minority development.

According to departmental officials, 28 Wakf inspectors would be appointed in 11 districts.

The district office of the minority affairs would also conduct the audit of accounts on a regular basis
