Institute awaits sanctioned development funds

MALDA, Oct. 29: Though the minority development minister Mr Abdus Sattar told reporters here that his department had sanctioned Rs 40 lakh for the University of Gour Banga to use for vocational studies for minority development, the sanction letter is yet to reach the UGB campus office.

UGB registrar Mr Tapas Chatterjee said he had heard about the matter through the media. “We have not received any departmental sanction letter regarding the above mentioned fund,” he said.

The registrar said the fund would be meant for vocational studies in UGB where minority students hailing from three districts ~ Malda, North Dinajpur and South Dinajpur ~ would get preference. “The proposed short-term course would enable the students to have access to several employment avenues,” he said.

Mr Sattar said the matter had already been discussed in detail with the vice chancellor of UGB.

“The registrar is expected to send a proposal soon for the vocational studies of minority students,” Mr Sattar added.

The minister also stated the minority development department would set up 23 Kasturba Gandhi Balika Vidyalaya in minority concentrated districts across the state.

The Central Government had launched the project in 2004 for the education of girls belonging to backward classes.

The minority development department has allotted Rs 20 crore for "women empowerment schemes" meant for those belonging to the minority community.
