Dept to look into minority community's grievances

Statesman News Service
MALDA, Oct.21: The state minority development department has formed a task force to ascertain whether the people belonging to minority community are being benefited proportionately from the various government-sponsored schemes in the state.
The objective of this task force is to build exact database and prepare a regular status report of minority people in the state in comparison with the other states in the country. The state minority development minister Mr Abdus Sattar said that previously the state government had no separate infrastructure to maintain detailed records regarding the minority-centred projects being implemented in the state.
“It is proving difficult to ascertain correctly the extent of the beneficial effects of the projects being implemented among the minorities as there are no records. The Sachar Committee has pointed out this lapse on the part of the state government in its report. We have thus decided to take corrective steps," Mr Sattar said.

“If we can properly keep records of the benefits reaching out to the minority people in course of the implementation of several government schemes the position of West Bengal would be better at the national level", he said. The district minority affairs department would be entrusted with the task of preparing and maintaining data base on regular basis.

According to him, the task force has been monitoring for the present nine government (state and central) sponsored schemes to ascertain the number of minority people engaged in nine ongoing government sponsored schemes. Citing an example, the minister claimed that 30 percent of the widows belonging to minority community had been brought under widow pension scheme.

“On the other hand, 18 percent of the minority people have got land right deeds in this state. Whereas the number of teachers in school and madrasha was 32,973 in 2006; the figure would certainly go up considerably with the review report to be prepared by the task force,” the minister asserted.
