BSF tighten vigil to prevent illegal animal trade

Statesman News Service

MALDA, 30 NOV: The Border Security Force has started search operations to intercept smugglers, involved in illegal trade of animals, along the border villages located in English Bazaar police station since early this morning. One of the camels which was being smuggled to Bangladesh was found from the English Bazaar town today. A group of twelve smugglers were trying to smuggle nearly 10 camels to Bangladesh through the border village Amjamtala in English Bazaar last night when one camel fell in a ditch injuring itself. Even after being beaten up it could not walk owing to the injury. Following the commotion local fishermen chased the smugglers away rescuing the animal. The smugglers immediately left the areas along with the other camels to cross the border. A few of them crossed the border but others failed. At last when border security forces of 123-battalion were alerted. Some smugglers took shelter in different villages in surrounding areas. The rescued camel, however, fell ill and died this morning. The Malda SP Mr Bhuban Mandal said: “We did not receive any such report related to camel smuggling to Bangladesh from the BSF. If BSF officials report us and handover seized camels I can give you statement about the incident”. Police are not concerned about the animal because the trade of this animal (camel) is not restricted within the country according to the wildlife Act, he added.
