Jail inmate dies at NB Medical College

MALDA, 25 DEC : An inmate of Malda correctional home, identified as Safiul Hoque (24) died at the North Bengal Medical College and Hospital (NBMC&H) yesterday, after suffering from fever and breathing problem.


Hoque was arrested on 13 December this year from Mahadipur area, close to India-Bangladesh border, under English Bazaar police station on charges of circulating fake Indian currency.


Two persons including Hoque were arrested in this connection and remanded in police custody for seven days for interrogation. On 19 December Hoque was lodged in jail.


He fell ill since 19 December and informed the jail superintendent. After being examined by the doctor he was advised to get admitted to the jail hospital.


His condition worsening, he was admitted to the Malda district hospital on 21 December. Examining the serious condition of the patient the doctors of Malda district hospital referred him to NBMC&H.


The Malda jail authorities made arrangements to send him to NBMC&H on 22 December through Siliguri correctional home.


He was admitted to the NBMC&H on 23 December where he died on 24 December morning.


Malda jail authorities informed his family members about his death and suggested them to contact Matigara police station to take over the body. Hoque's family members, resident of Kaliachak area, alleged that he died due to negligence of his health on part of the police while he was in custody.


The Malda jail superintendent Mr C R Gharai said: “An unnatural death case has been registered in the Matigara police station in Siliguri”.


The matter has been communicated to the state and national human rights commissions and arrangements have been made for inquest, Mr Gharai added.
