Police in Malda have arrested Congress leader

MALDA, 16 DEC: Police in Malda have arrested Congress leader and alleged gangland boss Tuhur Ali Biswas, from a village in English Bazaar, near his residence last evening. Police had arrested his adversary CPI-M leader and another suspected warlord Asadullah Biswas on Monday night. The two and their gangs had turned the Majampur area in the district into a wild west vying for the right of illegal trade with Bangladesh. With both crime lords behind bars, the police hope peace would return to Majampur. Leaders of different political parties, however, are wary. Commenting in the dual arrests, CPI-M district secretary Mr Jiban Moitra said: “The police have demanded that peace would be restored after the arrest of Asadullah Biswas. We hope the police are right.”Speaking on the same issue, Congress leader, Mr Enarul Haque, said: “The two leaders suffer from ego problems. If they are allowed to stay in touch with their respective gangs from jail, peace would never return to Majampur.” It is learnt that the police want to see the two men behind bars for at least six months to have an effect on them. The duo has been fighting it out over territory since the 90s. The police have framed more than 10 charges against each of the two leaders including murder, rioting, extortion and others but the locals are not confident the police would be able to establish the charges against them for lack of witness.”As far as the local people are concerned, no one would come forward to testify against the two leaders fearing future retribution. ;SNS
