The district magistrate Mr Sridhar Ghosh today said that the police were facing problem to manage the student elections.
“To prevent outsiders from entering colleges during student union elections, we have asked the authority of different colleges to hold the elections on a single date,” the DM said.
According to the police, violence has increased during the college elections. The proposed system would reduce hostilities, the police administration believes.
The DM and Malda SP Mr Bhuban Mandal held a meeting with the principals of different colleges on the issue recently where they put forth the suggestion to be introduced from next year.
The district magistrate has also requested the principals to complete students’ union elections by 10 January 2010.
According to the DM, the principals have assured to discuss the matter and try to introduce the system from next year.
According to the Malda SP, most policemen would leave for duty at the Sagar Mela after 10 January.
“Providing adequate security for the elections would become difficult if the franchise were held after that date,” the SP added.
