MALDA, 2 DEC: Malda district administration had proposed to the municipal affairs department to declare the main town of Chanchal sub-division as an urban area to set up a municipality there, but it is awaiting government's approval since 2008.

Following the demands of the local people and leaders the administration took initiative to send a proposal to the municipal affairs department and had been trying to do so since 2005. Finally the administration was able to send its proposal to the concerned department in 2007.

The then Chanchal sub-divisional officer had sent a report to the municipal affairs department through the then district magistrate to go ahead with the proposal. Even the municipal affairs department had sought some clarification and more reports from the local administration on the areas earmarked in order to declare the main town as an urban area.

In 2008, the local administration had sent more information following the clarification sought by the municipal affairs department but since then the proposal is awaiting for approval. The then sub-divisional officer had selected eight moujas of two gram panchayats ~ Kaligram and Bhakri ~ under Chanchal I and II blocks in order to make it known as urban areas.

The local bodies of those two areas had also submitted a detailed report of the areas elucidating on the basic infrastructure, people's demand and requirements.

“The matter is under the state government's consideration. We have planned to send another reminder to the government on the matter,” said Mr Sridhar Ghosh, the Malda district magistrate.

Recently the present SDO, Mr Subho Mukherjee requested the district magistrate to go ahead with further reminders to the government on this subject. The secretary of the Chanchal Merchants’ Association, Mr Pran Gopal Poddar blamed the local leaders including the MLA and the MP for not taking any initiative to earmark the area as an urban one, though they had promised to do so before the election.
