Statesman News Service
MALDA, 9 DEC: The public health engineering department has sanctioned nine drinking water projects in five blocks of Malda district. In keeping with public demand, PHE officials of Malda had sent proposals for the projects to their higher ups earlier this year. The proposals have ben approved. It is learnt the PHE sanctioned the projects in November. “Each project would cost over Rs 1.5 crore,” department officials in Malda informed. According to them, water would be lifted from the ground treated to remove iron particles and then supplied in the earmarked areas. All the projects would come up in the arsenic and fluoride free zones of the district. The officials said that water would be collected from heavy-duty deep tube wells and stored in reservoirs for distribution among the people. The distribution network would cover at least three moujas and would suffice for the expected population in the designated areas up to 2021.According to the PHE officials in Malda, two projects have been sanctioned in the Anandipur and Sailpur villages in English Bazaar block and four in Harishchandrapur-I and II blocks. Two drinking water projects have been sanctioned for Habibpur block, a rain fed zone in the Barind belt and one for Nimua village in Old Malda block. The PHE authority has asked its district officials to invite tenders for the projects and begin work on those soon.
