Mosquito nets a rarity in Malda hospital

Statesman News Service

MALDA, 30 NOV: Although the health department authority suggests that people use mosquito nets at home to avoid mosquito bite, mosquito nets are a rarity for patients in the Malda hospital. A number of admitted patients are malaria affected, which has turned the others apprehensive of their health. According to the health department authority in Malda, they do not have adequate nets to provide to every patient when the hospital is over full.

“In normal conditions we can provide nets to all patients but most often the hospital has to accommodate many more than its capacity. We cannot provide mosquito nets to each and every patient under those conditions which is why we do not provide mosquito nets to the patients at all,” said Dr Srikanta Roy, the CMOH in Malda.

He, however, added that patients are unlikely to suffer from mosquito menace in the hospital. “Disinfectant is sprayed in every ward including the curtains and window nets to keep out mosquitoes. There is no mosquito menace inside the hospital wards,” the CMOH claimed.

According to health officials, 24 patients have been admitted with malignant malaria since 1 November. Seven more malaria-affected patients were admitted in the district hospital since last week. “Most of affected are migrant labourers from English Bazaar, Kaliachak and other blocks,” the doctors said.

The CMOH admitted that hundreds of people, mostly migrant labourers, have been affected by malaria in the past three years in the district.
