Red Ribbon clubs step in to check HIV stigma

MALDA, 20 DEC: Members of 18 Red Ribbon Clubs of colleges were given training yesterday in Malda under Peer Educators’ programme to spread awareness among students on the need to inculcate positivity among HIV patients.

A flagship programme of national AIDS Control Organisation (Naco) and West Bengal State AIDS Prevention & Control Society, it was implemented by West Bengal Voluntary Blood Donors’ Forum. The secretary of the WBVBDF, Mr Apurba Ghosh and state representative Mrs Chandana Das trained the college students.

Mr Ghosh also met organisers of the Red Ribbon Club from Murshidabad, Siliguri, North and South Dinajpur and urged them to select peer educators and form a core group that will work with HIV positive people. Students have also been asked to organise blood donation camps in colleges, organise poster making competitions and celebrate AIDS Day to do away with the stigma associated with patients. Promotion of healthy lifestyle among peer educators and thalassemia prevention too has been included in the programme.

Mr Ghosh also said he was trying to organise quiz and music competitions among club members to be telecast on television channels as a part of the awareness campaign. The district magistrate Mr Sridhar Ghosh, secretary of the WBVDF Mr Apurba Ghosh and others too interacted with blood donors yesterday to encourage them to organise more blood donation camps. n SNS
