Traffic: EBM chairman seeks DM’s help

Statesman News Service

MALDA, 30 DEC: The chairman of the English Bazaar Municipality (EBM) has sought help from both the district magistrate and the sabhadhipati of Malda Zilla Parishad to overcome the problem of traffic congestion by setting up a parking place.

Mr Narendranath Tiwari, chairman of the Congress, Trinamul and BJP led-EBM, has informed the district magistrate Mr Sridhar Ghosh that the civic body wanted to set up a parking zone infront of the Malda Town Hall to ease the traffic congestion.

There is no such parking zone for four wheelers in central Malda town. Many people park their vehicles on either sides of the road in market places creating traffic congestion.

Mr Tiwari has approached the sabhadhipati to sanction funds to renovate the Malda Town Hall including development of the place, infront of the Hall, for setting up of a parking zone.

At present a group of winter garments sellers occupied the place before the Hall on rental basis with after seeking permission from the EBM.

The chairman of the EBM Mr Tiwari said: “We are facing acute problem of traffic congestion due to the absence of a parking place in the heart of the town. The small town has lost its capacity to accommodate the present number of vehicles population.”

Though the administration had planned to set up a parking zone in front of the B Ed College but it could not be implemented. Earlier the district authorities thought that the private bus stand would be used as a parking zone when the existing bus stand would be shifted and would be made a central bus terminus. But the central bus terminus is still awaiting its completion due to lack of funds.

The district administration had conceived the plan of a central bus terminus in 1995. In 2007-2008 the construction of the central bus terminus was started afresh.
