Probe into inferior quality seeds demanded

MALDA, 4 DEC: Secretary of the state agriculture department, Mr S Chopra has asked the managing director of the State Seed Corporation (SSC), Mr K Sarkar, to inquire into the inferior quality seeds that are being supplied to farmers in Malda.

Mr Chopra took the decision following a complaint lodged by Mrs Sabina Yeasmin, sabhadhipati of Malda Zilla Parishad (MZP). According to a senior officer of the agriculture department, the managing director of the SSC, Mr Sarkar will come down to Malda to hold a meeting with the Malda district manager of the SSC.

Mr Chopra, secretary of the agriculture department, has reportedly asked the managing director to replace the seeds with alternative higher quality seeds soon. However, following complaints from the farmers, the officials of the agriculture department confessed that wheat seeds were damaged by insects and were not suitable for sowing. Similarly, seeds for boro paddy were also said to be of inferior quality. The district agriculture officials then asked the MZP sabhadhipati to lodge a complaint with the secretary, Mr S Chopra.

Government had allotted seeds for free distribution to the farmers in November who were affected by Aila. The deputy director, agriculture, Mr Satinath Palit, said that cut-off date for sowing seeds is earlier in Malda than Burdwan due to the scarcity of irrigation water. “If the SSC can supply fresh quality seeds within a week, we can start distribution of wheat seeds and boro paddy to the farmers soon so that they can sow seeds by 12 December”, said Mr Satinath Palit. ;SNS
