Relief for thalassemic children in Malda

Statesman News Service

MALDA, 20 DEC: Dr. Ashish Mukherjee, director, Netaji Subhas Chandra Bose Cancer Research Institute in Kolkata, today examined two kids suffering from thalassemia and took responsibility for their treatment.

Father of the two kids, Mr Siadul Rahaman, who is a daily wage earner, had written to chief minister Mr Buddhadeb Bhattacharjee, pleading mercy killing as he could not bear the medical expences of his children.

Following a report in The Statesman Dr Mukherjee showed interest in examining the two kids and their thalassemia carrier parents.

With financial assistance from the department of Bio-Technology (under the Central government) a team led by Dr Mukherjee organised free medical camp for cancer and thalassemia patients at English Bazaar town, in Habibpur and its neighbouring Bmongola block and examined more than 300 people, including the two children and their parents.

According to Dr Mukherjee , the children were suffering from ‘intermediate’ thalassemia and required immediate operation. He said expenses for their operation would be borne by his trust and with funds from the Prime Minister.

A team under the the central government project, has decided to carry out research and work on patients suffering from cancer and thalassemia in Malda.

Dr Mukherjee said that Malda had the highest number of patients suffering from thalassimia when compared to other North Bengal districts.

“In the first week of January a tele-medicine centre will be opened in Malda under the Central government project”, Dr Mukherjee said.
