Water woes continue in parts of Malda

MALDA, 23 DEC: Arsenic-free drinking water distribution was disrupted since last Thursday in different parts of the Manikchak, Kaliachak block II and parts of English Bazaar block and town, as pipelines are being repaired in different zones.

Since Thursday water supply was suspended when the Public Health Engineering (PHE) department started work on pipeline that carry water from the intake point located at Shankaritola Ghaat and treat it at the Mathurapur water treatment plant at Manikchak.

Water lifting was suspended for three days from the Fulohar. However, after restoration of pipelines, the PHE started lifting water from the river and after treatment, started distributing arsenic-free water from the fourth day.

People in different areas have suffered a lot owing to scarcity of drinking water in the past six days. The distribution of water was suspended partly again in the zone of English Bazaar block and town due to damage of pipelines at Bagbari.

Though the PHE started replacement of old and damaged pipes and started laying new ones at Bagbari in English Bazaar, but was not able to complete the restoration work till today. The superintending engineer of the PHE came to know the matter when residents of English Bazaar informed the PHE officials today. The superintendent engineer has asked the assistant engineer to supply water soon after replacing the damaged pipelines by this afternoon.

The executive engineer of the PHE (arsenic) Malda division, Mr Swapan Maitra, was on leave and was not available for comment. ;SNS
