MALDA, 27 DEC: All former sabhadhipatis will be felicitated in a panchayat mela to mark Panchayat Saptaho starting from 29 December in Malda. The district administration and the Malda Zilla Parishad are jointly organising the two-day fair near Indoor Stadium here.
The administration is not in a position to invite second former sabhadhipati, Mr Abdul Alim, who at present is settled in Bangladesh. He was the second sabhadhipati of the Malda Zilla Parishad when Congress came to power.
The founder sabhadhipati Manik Jha died few years ago. The administration has invited his elder son to attend the programme.
Another former sabhadhipati Mr Soumen Pandey will not be able to attend the programme owing to an eye operation that he will have to go through on the same day.
This apart, the district administration will felicitate seven panchayat members, who have been serving the panchayats for more than 25 years.
The vice-president of the Malda district Congress, Mr Masidur Rahaman, has been selected for his contribution to gram panchayat for more than 25 years.
The district panchayat department will also declare the best panchayat samiti in the district and organise competitions among gram panchayats.
The additional executive officer, Mr Kajal Banerjee said: “We will also arrange a felicitation programme for the toppers in Madhyamik, Higher Secondary and Madrassa examinations.”
