EBM asks DM for waste land

Statesman News Service

MALDA 3 DEC: The English Bazaar Municipality (EBM) has requested the Malda district magistrate to provide a plot of land for implementing Solid Waste Management project.

The EBM had to approach the DM after having failed to buy the required plot of land at the outskirts of the town mainly due to its lack of fund. The civic body had received a fund of more than Rs 1 crore from the Central government, under Jawaharlal Nehru National Urban Reconstruction Mission, for implementing the solid waste management two years ago but it could not go ahead with it as there was no fund to get hold of a land.

Though the civic body has selected a plot of land at Nimasaria in English Bazaar block, it finally changed its decision following protests from local people. The EBM vice-chairman, Mr Dulal Sarkar said: “It is impossible for us to buy the required amount of land, which is at least 20 bighas, from our own fund. The present cost of the land is nearly Rs 1.50 crore but we do not have such fund position”.

“We have requested the district magistrate to provide a plot of vested land close to the town for the project,” Mr Sarkar said.

Meanwhile, the EBM has planned to request DM Mr Sridhar Ghosh to extend the period which was fixed by him for dumping garbage at Chandan Park in Ward no 25 under the English Bazaar municipal area, where local people had stopped dumping trash for the time being following the order. The district administration had to interfere in order to control public agitation at Chandan Park in English Bazaar town.

The Malda sub-divisional officer had allowed the civic body to dump garbage there for one month.

Though Mr Ghosh has also asked the EBM to find out an alternative land for the purpose of dumping trash but the civic body failed to do so.

The DM also asked the EBM not to dump garbage at Chandan Park following a decision of the minority affairs department, who wants to set up a Muslim girls’ hostel and training centre on the land owned by the Wakf Board.
