Agitation stalls loco maintenance work

Statesman News Service
MALDA, Dec. 5: Repairing and maintenance of locomotives could not be done for over seven hours today morning at the Diesel Loco Shed following a cease work called by railway employees belonging to Northeast Frontier Railway.

The agitators were demanding to stop the movement of heavy lorries on a narrow road owned by the NF railways. According to them, accidents on the road have claimed several lives and the authority's reluctance to take steps against it had forced them to launch an agitation.

According to the agitators, the Malda railway division under Eastern Railway was using the road, from Loco Shed to Firoze Shah Colony with permission from the divisional mechanical engineer (NF) for transporting goods from the Malda Railway Station (ER) rake point.

On Wednesday, nearly 500 employees of the NF Rail Diesel Loco Shed blocked that road after the death of Sanjib Kumar Das, foreman of the Loco Shed. He was run over by a lorry.

Though the movement of loaded lorries remained suspended yesterday, they were back on the road today. The agitators called off the movement after the ADRM and other senior railway employees (ER) met them and ensured an amicable solution.
