Cong man detained in fake currency case

MALDA, Dec. 3: A CBI team from New Delhi along with the Malda police today raided the house of a local Congress leader in Kaliachak police station and detained him for interrogation in connection with fake currency circulation across the country in league with Bangladeshi racketeers.

According to police officials, the CBI team came here to nab ‘key persons’ associated with fake currency circulation and Mr Musharraf Hossain, the former civic body member in Kaliachak, was suspected to be one of them. It may be recalled that Uttar Pradesh police had arrested a couple, Mr Liakat Ali and his wife Mrs Sakila Bibi, in December, 2007, in connection with huge circulation of fake currencies to UP and other states. Mrs Sakila was the pradhan of Alipur gram panchayat in Kaliachak I block last year. Mr Ali and his wife are still in custody of the UP police.

The raiding party, it was learnt, did not find anything of substance in Mr Musharraf’ residence at Maruabadi village. The team has detained him for interrogation.

According to police, Mr Musharraf has many relatives in Bangladesh and has contacts with several persons including politicians of Bangladesh. He is also suspected to be involved in illegal trade with Bangladesh. Police suspect  that he is involved in cattle smuggling, fake currency circulation and other crimes. The CBI team is also probing about his possible connection with Pakistan's ISI sponsored outfits in Bangladesh. n SNS
