Priya supporters want PM to contest L S polls

Statesman News Service
MALDA, Dec. 5: The demand for Prime Minister Dr Manmohan Singh to contest from the North Malda Parliamentary seat in the next Lok Sabha elections is growing. The Malda MP, Mr AH Khan Choudhury had mooted the proposal. It is clear now that a large section of Congress supporters in Malda, who are believed to be close to Mr Priya Ranjan Das Munshi, are not ready to accept Mr A N Khan Choudhury, elder brother of the Malda MP, as candidate for the North Malda seat.

“Why should we accept the younger brother of late A B A Ghani Khan Choudhury as candidate? What is his political contribution? Followers of late Barkat-da (Ghani Khan) cannot forget that Mr A N Khan Choudhury had contested as an Independent candidate against Barkat-da,” said Mr Suresh Bihani a Congress leader close to Mr Priya Ranjan Das Munshi.

He said: “Not only the Malda MP, but the external affairs minister and Jangipur MP Mr Pranab Mukherjee and his associates too believe that if Dr Singh contests from the ‘safe seat’ of North Malda, the Congress will gain in Parliament.”

Mr Behani further added: “I have made up my mind to contest from the North Malda seat if the Prime Minister does not want to contest from it. We are watching the physical condition of Mr Das Munshi and have decided to go to New Delhi after 15 January to seek green signal from the high command.”
