Asim wants lesser load for schoolkids

MALDA, Dec. 18: The finance minister, Dr Asim Dasgupta, today said that the state government has planned to reduce the school level syllabus.

Former student of Malda Zilla School, Mr Dasgupta inaugurated the celebration of 150 years of the school in English Bazaar town today.

He shared his experiences and and memories of his school days from 1955 to 57.

He said: “Owing to the load of the huge syllabus, students are too tired to actually enjoy their studies. If we could reduce the syllabus there would be no need for the students to attend tuition classes and thus they would get more time to pursue their creative hobbies.

The minister also said that it was a right decision to reintroduce English at the primary level. He said that teh teachers should talk to the students ijn English so that they can be fluent with the language.

He thanked the founder headmaster of Malda Zilla School, late Gorokh Chandra Chakraborty, for his contribution in setting up the school here and recalled his class teacher Purnabrata Sarkar's method of teaching. Exemplifying how the teachers used to teach their students in class VI, VII and VIII in 1955 to 57, he urged the present teachers to adopt similar methods. The finance minister announced that he would do his best to sanction funds for the development of the school.

“Though a headmaster can not appeal to the finance minister directly seeking fund but this school is an exception and the present head master has the right to ask for funds from me directly,” he said. n SNS
