Border fencing found cut near Muchia

Statesman News Service
MALDA, Dec. 28: Despite tight security along the border following the Mumbai terror attacks and the imminent general election in Bangladesh, slated on 29 December, a group of rustlers cut some portion of the barbed wire fencing near Muchia border outpost near the Malda police station last night.

BSF officers spotted the spot in the morning during regular patrolling. They repaired it immediately. On asking, they admitted that a group of rustlers had tried to smuggle cattle into Bangladesh through that route. According to them, there is evidence that a number of cattle smugglers had attempted to shove some cattle to the other side of the border along the bank of the Mahananda taking advantage of the blinding mist.

“No cattle footprints were found on the Bangladesh side through which the alleged cattle rustlers are supposed to have attempted to smuggle cattle,” Mr JC Nayek, a senior BSF officer said, however.

The BSF commandant sought clarification from the team of BSF jawans, posted for duty at the sensitive border point about the incident. Following the detection of the punctured fencing a team of BSF officers responsible for guarding that stretch raided neighbouring villages along the border this morning but failed to get definite clues concerning the incident due to the alleged non-cooperation from the villagers.

Security has been tightened on both sides of the border. The BSF has tightened vigilance not just along the unfenced and riverine border zones but also along some vulnerable spots in the fenced areas on the Indian side.
