Automatic machines to collect electricity bills soon

Statesman News Service
MALDA, Dec. 30: In order to reduce the workload of staff and the long queue in front of cash counters, the state electricity department has planned to install an automatic machine like ATM to collect electricity bill payments.

The department has planned to install such an automatic bill collection machine in all district towns in this state soon, according to the divisional manager of the State Electricity Distribution Company Limited (SEDCL), Mr DK Mondal.

Such a machine, Savok, will collect electricity bills in 24 hours from consumers. The department has planned to install the machine in Malda and Siliguri town, Mr Mondal said.

In Malda town, the machine will be installed on Ravindra Avenue on the ground floor of the SEDCL operating and maintenance office.

“Owing to fake currency menace in Malda district, SEDCL authorities are considering upgrading the machine scientifically so that it can detect fake currency if any consumer inserts any fake note. This is the reason we are taking time to install the machine,” Mr Mondal said.

The machine will only accept round figure payments.

“It the bill amount is Rs 302, the machine will receive Rs 310, the balance will be adjusted within the next bill,” he said.

Consumers will get money receipts from the machine according to the programming records. The consumers will have to pay the bill through the machine by the due date.

If due date has expired, the consumers will have to go to the SEDCL cash counter. Besides the automatic machine, the consumers will be able to deposit electricity bills in all 177 Tathya Mitra Kendra across Malda district, the SEDCL officials said.
