MALDA, Dec. 29: The Malda district administration recently vacated an office meant to house a tribal girls’ hostel at Chanchal following a Supreme Court order. The administration has also issued a notification inviting interested tribal girls to avail of lodging at the facility.
The district administration had installed the SDO's office and the treasury in the building, as the building was lying idle for several months after construction. Though the tribal welfare department had issued a notice inviting tribal girls to lodge in the 60-bed facility, none had applied from Chanchal sub-division.
It was then that the administration, handicapped for want of adequate number of offices, had declared to accommodate the SDO's office and treasury in the building temporarily. But resenting the decision, the tribal body in Malda district protested and went to court against it. Meanwhile, a separate building was constructed to house the Chanchal SDO's office but the shifting process of the office functioning in the hostel got held up due to lack of furniture in the new premises. “The treasury has already been shifted to vacate the tribal girls’ hostel following the Supreme Court order. The district magistrate has also issued a notification to invite tribal girls to lodge in the facility,” said Mr P C Sit, ADM (general), Malda. n SNS
