Suspected Maoist held

MALDA, Dec. 31: The Malda police, with help from government railway police (GRP) in Nadia, arrested Ranjit Barman (28), a suspected Maoist action squad member, at Krishnanagar railway station yesterday.

The Circle Inspector of police in Malda, Mr A Raha, went to Krishnanagar, Nadia in search of Barman, a resident of Chhatiandanga under Bamongola police station in Malda. Ranjit was absconding since 2005, the police said. The English Bazaar police today produced him at the Malda court and appealed for his remand in police custody for interrogation.

The police are on the lookout for two Maoist activists, Lakshmi Tudu, wife of Ranjit Barman and Amin Tudu, another aide. Police got information that Lakshmi, is currently in Murshidabad.Four cases including were registered against Ranjit Barman at Bamongola and Habibpur police stations. The Malda police recovered arms from the house of Amin Tudu in Habibpur, allegedly been kept by Ranjit Barman.
