Database on witch hunting soon

MALDA, Dec. 24: The Malda police have decided to prepare a database on witch hunting in the tribal dominated areas of the district. The database would contain information on the reasons leading to the brutal acts, number of known cases so far, problems in the tribal society and other facts.

According to the superintendent of police, Malda, Mr Satyajit Bandyopadhayay, police stations in the tribal dominated areas have been asked to submit a report on the matter in detail. It was learnt that the police were specially looking into areas like Habibpur, Gazol, Old Malda and Bamongola, which have large tribal population.

“False beliefs, conspiracies to brand some one a witch in greed of land and property are some of the known facts that lead to witch hunting in the tribal community. The objective of our exercise is to learn as much as we can in addition to the known facts and then launch an awareness campaigning in the tribal dominated villages to check the menace of witch hunting,” the SP, said. The SP further added that in most cases groups of touts hatch such macabre plans and simply kill a man or a woman for property and assets in the name of cleansing the tribal society of witches. n SNS
